Getting Your P2

After one year of holding your P1 license, you can take the next step and go for your P2 License. To go from your red Ps to green Ps, you’ll need to pass the Hazard Perception Test (HPT).

What is the HPT?

The hazard perception test is basically a test to show that your year of driving experience has shown you how to deal with sticky situations and that you thoroughly understand the pillars of safe driving. The test will simulate such scenarios (e.g. when to turn through oncoming traffic) to make sure that you can make the right decisions in everyday driving situations.

The situations presented are always based on what the RMS calls ‘hazards’ (scenarios that may lead to an accident). A safe driver can spot these hazards and avoid them before it is too late.

Taking the test

A copy of the Hazard Perception Handbook can be downloaded here and should be viewed thoroughly. The best practice possible however is in your day to day driving as a P1 license holder and the ability to remained focused at the wheel and continue to develop you driving and decision making skills. RMS will inform you immediately whether you have passed or not and a new license will be issued if you have passed.
