PRIME Minister Tony Abbott has rejected calls for a kilometre-based system of new road tolls but said “user pays” options for paying for roads are a fact of life.

Mr Abbott backed away from a specific option for trialling GPS technology to charge motorists based on the distance they drive that was contained in Productivity Commission report.

“Obviously, tolls are a fact of life and we pay for roads through tolls, we pay for roads through our taxes, we pay for roads through our registration,” Mr Abbott told Adelaide radio 5AA.
