Damage Control

You've just had a car accident. Besides wishing that it never happened, what can you do and what are your responsibilities?

Firstly you must check to see if you or anybody else involved in the accident needs medical attention. If so, contact 000 for ambulance and police assistance immediately.

Knowing what information to collect from the other driver can be confusing after an accident. Let’s face it, you really can’t focus on anything right now ad you’re head is in shambles. It is important however to keep in mind that certain pieces of important information will need to be collected.

Essential Information to collect includes:

  • The name, drivers licence number and address of anyone involved in the accident

  • The registration number of the cars involved in the accident

  • The make and model of the cars involved in the accident, and the name and address of the vehicle owner if it’s not the driver.

  • Record and take photos (if safe) of all the damages to the vehicles

  • The date, time and location of the accident

  • Names, contact details and address of any witnesses and police officers

You should contact your insurance company immediately and follow their procedures for making a claim by using the collected information from above. Remember you must report an accident at all times if anyone is injured or if the cars involved in the accident need to be towed away.
